WEST HAVEN — When Shuana Tucker was named chief talent officer of the Connecticut State Department of Education in 2020, a significant component of her charge was to oversee a more diverse workforce in the state's public schools. In her own schooling experience, outside Connecticut, Tucker said she did not encounter a teacher of color until she had a typing teacher in high school. "It would've been nice to see other persons of other cultures that I could've been exposed to earlier on in my life as opposed to later," she said.
